Announcement

The PhD Research Fellowships are intended to finance research activities leading to the award of a Doctoral Degree at Portuguese universities. The research work will be carried out at the Madeira Chemistry Research Centre, University of Madeira (UMa), which will be the host institution for the fellows, without prejudice to the fact that the work may occur in collaboration with more than one institution. The research activities leading to the award of the Doctoral Degree to the selected fellows must be framed in the Madeira Chemistry Research Centre's activities and strategic plan and must be developed in the scope of the PhD Programme in Chemistry of the University of Madeira. The work plan may be carried out entirely or partially in a national institution (2 mixed fellowships). The duration of PhD studentships is annual (12 months), renewable up to four years (48 months), and cannot be granted for a period less than 3 consecutive months. In the case of a studentship carried out both in Portugal and abroad, the work plan period in a foreign institution cannot exceed 24 months.

  • Requirements and Limitations

    Available Positions: 3

    Required Degree: B.Sc.

    Areas of the required degree: Biochemistry.

    Evaluation Criteria:

    The evaluation considers the applicant’s merit, the adequacy of previous training/experience, the candidate's motivation to the research objectives of the CQM, and the interview.

    The evaluation process has 2 (two) mandatory, distinct, and successive stages, and the accepted applications will be scored on a scale of 0 to 20 values according to the following evaluation criteria:

    Stage 1 (E1) - Criterion A (scored from 0 to 20 values and presented in tenths) will focus on Curricular Analysis (AC) and Motivation (M) for this PhD.

    The Curricular Analysis and Motivation will each have a weight of 75% and 25%, respectively, in the final classification of the first stage of the competition, which is expressed by the following formula:

    E1=(0,75xAC) + (0,25xM)

    The Curricular Analysis (AC) - scored from 0 to 20 values and presented in tenths - has a weighting of 75% in the final classification of the first stage of the competition and will focus about:

    • Subcriterion AC1 - Academic Path (reflecting the classifications of academic degrees) with a weight of 60%;

    • Subcriterion AC2 - Personal Curriculum (CP) (which reflects the scientific and professional and academic path when applicable and includes scientific production and participation in research projects within the area and application theme) with a weighting of 40%.

    The Motivation (M) for the accomplishment of this PhD and the justification of the interest to investigate in a specific topic with relevance in Chemistry, area and application theme expressed in the designated “motivation letter” - scored from 0 to 20 values and presented in tenths - has a weight of 25% in the final classification of the first stage of the contest.

    All Candidates with a score lower than 14.0 (fourteen) values in criterion A of the first stage of the competition (E1) will be excluded from the competition - "Excluded".

    Stage 2 (E2) - Criterion B: Will be admitted to the second stage of the competition (E2) the first five (5) candidates of each application theme to the specific areas of Nanochemistry and Nanomaterials or Natural Products with the highest final classification in the criterion A and equal to or greater than 14.0 (fourteen) values in the first stage of the contest (E1), ordered in descending order of scores - "Admitted to the Interview". If a tie is observedin the attribution of the final classification of the last candidate admitted to the interview in the first stage of the competition, all candidates who have the same final classification as the E1 of the last candidate "Admitted to the Interview" will be admitted to the second stage.

    The second stage (E2), criterion B (scored from 0 to 20 values and presented in tenths) consists of an individual interview (EI) of the candidate and has a weighting of 100% in the final classification of the second stage of the competition.

    The final classification of criterion B, is the final classification of the Individual Interview (EI) (B = Final Classification EI). which will result from the arithmetic mean of the scores of all the criteria evaluated in the EI by the present elements of the Jury.

    The Individual Interview (EI), aimed at assessing each candidate's scientific potential in the area/theme of the competition, will focus on the following criteria: motivation and availability, professional knowledge and attitude, interpersonal skills, and communication skills (including knowledge of English). Each of these EI criteria will be evaluated from 0 to 20 values and presented in tenths by the Jury elements present in the EI (at least 3 elements of the Jury will be present in each EI).

    Candidates with final classification in criterion B, the second stage of the competition (EI) less than 15.0 (fifteen) values will be automatically excluded - "Excluded". For tiebreaking purposes of the final classification in criterion B (EI), the ranking of candidates will be made based on the ratings assigned to each of the evaluation criteria in the following order of precedence: (i) motivation and availability, (ii) knowledge and professional attitude, (iii) communication skills and (iv) interpersonal relationships.

    In order to decide the conditional granting of the PhD Fellowships, applicants will be ranked according to the weighted average of the marks obtained for each of the two criteria (A and B), translated by the following formula:

    Final classification = (0,6 x A) + (0,4 x B)

    For tiebreaking purposes, applicants will be ranked on the basis of the marks awarded to each of the evaluation criteria in the following order of precedence: criterion A, criterion B.

    Scholarships that are not awarded will be carried over to the following academic year.

    Important Notice for candidates with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions:

    •Applicants with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions may apply and will be assessed with the same criteria as applicants with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, since they provide, in their application, proof of recognition of such academic degrees and conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale, according to the applicable legislation.

    •Candidates with foreign degrees who do not provide proof of conversion from the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale will be assessed with the minimum classification of 12,0 (twelve) points on subcriterion AC1 of criterium A (Stage 1).

    •In any case, fellowship contracts with applicants with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be concluded upon presentation of proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of the final classification, as indicated above.

    Applicants whose application is assessed with a final mark of less than 15 (fifteen) points are not eligible for a grant.
