CQM will receive its former member, and first Chinese researcher, Professor Yulin Li (Engineering Research Center for Biomedical Materials of Ministry of Education, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), Shanghai, China). He will be the invited lecturer of the Conference "Development of polylactide-based materials and bioabsorbable fixation implants for translational applications, to be held at the University of Madeira, next 25th July, 15h00 (conference room 0.57).
Registration to attend the seminar is required (link below).

ABSTRACT

The special features (compositions and structure) of bone tissues endow them with robust mechanical properties as well as powerful biological functions (e.g., self-regeneration as well as blood production capacity). With the deep understanding of biomaterials and tissue engineering, it has been found that, beside biochemical factors (e.g., growth factors, hormones), the physical properties of materials (e.g., compositions, mechanical properties as well as geometrical structures) also play an important role on meditation of cell behaviors and/or tissue functions. Herein, medical-grade polylactide-based materials were prepared using a ring opening method. A kind of self-reinforced manufacturing technology was developed to produce bioabsorbable bone fixation implants with mechanical robustness via in situ compositing with bioactive calcium phosphate materials. This work may offer new insight for design of advanced bone regeneration implants for clinical applications.

Yulin Li is a Professor at Engineering Research Center for Biomedical Materials of Ministry of Education, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), Shanghai, China. He together Academician Prof. Changsheng Liu brought up the new concept of “materiobiology”, aiming at optimizing the biological effects of biomaterials on biological functions at cell, tissue, organ, and the whole organism levels. His research interests are involved in the development of medical grade polymers for biomedical applications. Prof. Li’s work is involved in the exploration of bioactive materials for bone regeneration and drug delivery, especially focusing the clinical translation of regenerative medicine. He is also pioneered in the development of biodegradable and injectable hydrogels for drug delivery and self-reinforced bone screw for bone regeneration. He has published 2 edited book, and more than 100 journal papers, including Adv. Funct. Mater., Biomaterials, Chem. Rev. etc.
