The Madeira Chemistry Research Centre (CQM) will organize, from 16th to 17th of May of 2023, the course "From biomaterials to nanometals", to be held at Sala 0.57, University of Madeira (Campus da Penteada), from 14h30 to 17h30.
The course will be given by the invited lecturer, Professor Dagmara Malina, from the Cracow University of Technology, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Department of Chemical Technology.
Dagmara Malina, in 2009, graduated from the Biotechnology-Interfaculty Studies of the University of Agriculture in Krakow. In 2010, she finished postgraduate studies in the field of Biomaterials – Materials for Medicine at the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics of AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow. Later, in 2013, she completed doctoral studies at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology of the Cracow University of Technology in the field of Chemical Technology. During 2014, on the basis of a doctoral dissertation entitled “Preparation and characterization of hydroxyapatite modified with selected metals”, she obtained a PhD degree in the field of Technical Sciences in the scientific discipline of Chemical Technology. Currently, she is an adjunct at the Institute of Chemistry and Inorganic Technology at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology of the Cracow University of Technology.
COURSE PROGRAM
Lecture/Discussion panel I: Introduction to biomaterials (3 h)
The teaching staff member as a specialist in biomaterials issues will present recent information about materials applied in medicine (definitions, applications) mainly focusing on bioceramic and polymer biomaterials used as bone or teeth substitutions or wound dressings. The discussion panel will introduce the students to the methods of biomaterials preparation and their physicochemical characterization. The Audience will be presented with sample biomaterials and multimedia materials obtained in the teaching staff member laboratories.
Lecture/Discussion panel II: Nanometals – principles and applications (3 h)
The teaching staff member as a specialist in nanotechnology, especially nanometals synthesis will present principles of nanotechnology, applications of nanomaterials and will mention about risk assessment of environmental release. After the theoretical introduction, during the discussion panel, the teaching staff member will talk about the methods of obtaining, characterizing, and assessing the toxicity of metal nanoparticles. The examples of nanomaterials will be presented, and issues on the risk assessment of nanomaterials applications will be discussed with the Audience. The discussion will be enriched with multimedia prepared by the teaching staff member.
