The University of Madeira/Santander-Totta Bank and Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) are launching a public international call for an Invited Chair in the field of Nanotechnology/Nanochemistry and Nanomaterials.

The primary goal of the Invited Chair call is to attract a top level researcher to University of Madeira in order to develop and promote emerging areas of knowledge, namely boost the growth of R&D activities, and advanced training in the field of Nanochemistry and Nanomaterials at Centro de Química da Madeira (CQM).

The successful candidate is expected to become a member of the Centro de Química da Madeira, promote CQM’s strategic scientific areas (Materials and Natural Products) and perform experimental research in the framework of the Nanotechnology Portuguese Network (PortugalNano). We welcome applications from candidates with a research profile in Nanochemistry and Nanomaterials, a proven record of excellence in research and also in teaching and training.

Job description

The University of Madeira/Santander-Totta Bank Invited Chair will be awarded to an international top level researcher that will be hired by the University of Madeira as an Invited Professor, for a period of four years. However, University of Madeira has the right to revoke the contract should the researcher fail to fulfill the assigned tasks. The researcher is expected to:

  1. Develop research in the field of Nanochemistry and Nanomaterials at University of Madeira, akin to CQM’s main research areas (Natural Products and Materials);
  2. Participate in the training of researchers and students, particularly post-graduate students.
  3. Participate in the organization of conferences, workshops, summer schools, as well as in the development of an international master/doctoral program in the field of Nanochemistry/Nanomaterials;
  4. Promote partnerships between the University of Madeira/Centro de Química da Madeira and foreign or international institutions, namely within the framework of the Portuguese Nanotechnology Network (PortugalNano);
  5. Deliver lectures and seminars related to his/her specific field and contribute to the promotion of scientific culture in his/her particular scientific area.

Candidates with proposals involving partnerships with foreign institutions in the field of Nanotechnology/Nanochemistry will be especially considered in case they include the gradual transfer of their research to University of Madeira/Centro de Química da Madeira during the first two years.

This Invited Chair aims at the recruitment and settlement at University of Madeira/Centro de Química da Madeira of a researcher recognized by his/her peers as being an international leader in his/her field of research, or the recruitment and accommodation of a young researcher of outstanding merit. Exceptionally, additional support can be considered for researchers of a high international standard, who may wish to be accompanied by some members of their current research team and/or may want to hire a new research group in University of Madeira/Centro de Química da Madeira.  

Terms

  • 4 year appointment with University of Madeira (UMa);
  • Commensurate with experience, gross income can reach up to 40,000 euros (per semester) with additional fringe benefits such as medical assistance and retirement plans. Portugal has tax exemption treaties with several countries.
  • Recipient must spend at least one semester every year at UMa

Income

The invited chair will be awarded for 4 years, with an interim evaluation by the end of the second year. The maximum income is the following:

  •  Up to 40.000€ gross income and fringe benefits, supported by University of Madeira/Santander-Totta Bank, and the researcher must spend, at least, one semester in each year at University of Madeira/Centro de Química da Madeira.
  • Foundation for Science and Technology will support an additional amount up to 10.000€ gross income.

 The University of Madeira (UMa), located in the most beautiful island of North Atlantic Ocean, Madeira Island, is the youngest and the smallest of the Portuguese Public Universities, congregating both university and polytechnic education. With approximately 2700 undergraduates, 500 graduate students (Master and PhD), and 250 faculty is a young and dynamic University devoted to teaching, both applied and fundamental research, and offering exceptional learning and working environment. Madeira Island is well connected by plane with the main European cities, and offers a good and safe quality of life as well as outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities.

The Centro de Química da Madeira, CQM (http://cqm.uma.pt/ ), at Madeira Island, is a multidisciplinary and multicultural research unit supported by FCT, since 2004. CQM has a research staff of 18 PhDs and 10 PhDs students organized in two groups of research (Natural Products and Materials) and has ongoing research projects representing a total amount of 2 M€. Recently, CQM received from FCT ca. 0.5 M€ for the acquisition of two new equipments – a 400MHz NMR and a LCMSMS. Application Details:

The call will open December 1st, 2009, and the deadline to submit applications is February 15th (Dead-line extended until 28 of February), 2010. Nonetheless, the call may remain open if no candidate is deemed suitable according to the criteria specified below.

The Chair will be in effect in April 2010, or as soon as agreed with the selected candidate.

Selection criteria:

The selection of the candidates will be carried out, using the following criteria, by an international panel of evaluators to be appointed by University of Madeira:

  1. Scientific and technical track record and potential of the researcher.
  2. Ability to integrate well in the main research areas at Centro de Química da Madeira and to take advantage of the Center’s existing research infrastructure.
  3. Record in the supervision of graduate students/post-doctoral fellows.
  4. Record of funded research grants and national and international collaborations.
  5. Capacity to mobilize international partnerships, as well as networks and other research initiatives and experience in organization/cooperation in masters/doctoral programs.
  6. Quality of a proposal to stimulate ties between the University of Madeira/Centro de Química da Madeira and the international scientific community and promotion of activities within the framework of the Portuguese Nanotechnology Network (PortugalNano).
